Best Recipe - French Toast

1 L egg

2T unsalted butter, melted

3/4C milk

2t vanilla extract

2T sugar

1/3C unbleached all-purpose flour

1/4t salt

4-5 slices day-old challah

 

one additional suggestion provided by my (brilliant, gourmande) mother in response to the lumpiness of the batter: create a paste out of the milk and flour to reduce clumping. Two more notes from experience with variations

  • make the batter thicker for french bread
  • use challah; toast the bread lightly before preparing the recipe to give a great texture contrast - slightly crunchy 'crust'
