  • Gyre Curriculum Components:

The following are intended to serve as components for basic education about the great pacific garbage patch. In combination with GyreSticker.com and GyreSticker.org, this resource is intended to help educate about ocean health crises in the north Pacific.

The Algalita Foundation has some great educational resources, here. "...everything you need to get your school or organization learning and teaching others about the fate of plastic waste in the marine environment."

Captain Moore talks about his alarming discovery at TED

This is a 7 minute talk from Captain Moore, who discovered the gyre - a good overview / introduction. If you're not yet familiar with TED, you should be.

Dianna Cohen of the Plastic Pollution Coalition talks at TED about turning off the spigot, ending our inputs into the polluted system.

    (~5 minute video)

Capt. Charles Moore talks at Google's Mountainview offices YouTube: 63 minutes

Capt. Charles Moore on Letterman - YouTube: 3 minutes

The Kaisei project - researching the plastic vortex

Google Earth data for the Kaisei Project -- Google Earth required

unsure if this can be followed on G apps for mobile; tests pending...

The Tahina Expedition addresses ocean trash

Cryptic Moth made a film, "Adicted to Plastic".

They want you to buy it. I'm cool with it if you just want to watch the trailer... There's a second trailer, here:

    http://www.crypticmoth.com/plastic.php

Moore's quoted in the second clip (which is longer) a few times including a powerful statement that every bit of plastic that has ever been made is still here. That's a good conversation starter.

Choking on our own litter - when will we stop?

I've recently gained the support of Algalita Foundation. As I gain the approval of other organizations, I will increase publicity around the site. My next intended step is approaching grantmakers to fund an initial purchase of stickers for distribution to other participating organizations. Please contact us with matching contribution offers. We will aggregate these 'soft' offers as 'soft orders,' or pledges to build the legitimacy of our prospective 501c3 organization. Once we have reached the escrow threshold for this venture, we will move forward, without any unknown risks to any participating parties.

I've reached out to several friends in the public and private school systems to see if/how to get permission to incorporate the stickers into the cirriculum. Given that the cost per reached student is SO low, I anticipate that the toughest sticking point to successful implementation will be penetrating the school system. Please contact me if you have inroads, there. Ideally, I'd like to launch through Chicago Public Schools, or a similarly large network and springboard a media release to help stimulate other school systems to implement.

    Next up:

Approaching some of the following orgs for contingent funding and school suport:

    Surfrider

    Cousteau

    Zazzle

    Cafe Press

    Second Nature

    AASHE

Until then, please visit GyreSticker to purchase stickers which can be placed on any map with a body of water to educate about this crisis. Floating litter affects us all. For example, here is a duck on Lake Michigan, paddling through floating litter. Join now and add your photos and links! I recognize market leaders do not yet offer non-PVC stickers -- I recently heard about acompany that offers such a product. They made the stickers for Skquort. I can't recall the name of the company -- it's not Cafe Press...
